Ice Dams: Stay Away from Power Washers
If you have an ice dam on your roof, you need to be aware of not only who you hire to do the job, but also what tools they are using as well. A few companies around the metro are using high-temperature pressure washers instead of steamers. Why is this so important? Pressure washers cause damage to your roof including shingles and vinyl, and can also remove paint from surfaces and leave a “tiger stripped” appearance on bricks.
Pressure washers depend on pressure to remove ice, and not on heat, and they function at a slightly higher temperature than a typical water heater (120-170 degrees). In short, high temperature water pressures do more harm than good, and it is best to stay away from any company that uses them to remove ice dams.
It is never a good idea to use high-pressure water on your roof. Your roof is very vulnerable in frigid temperature which can cause damage if it receives too much pressure.
Steaming Ice Dams
A steamer runs entirely different than a power washer. A steam washer coverts cold tap water into true steam, which can only happen when the temperature is around 250 to 300 degrees. Steam removes ice much quicker than high-pressure water, which saves time and money. Steam washers are the safest and most effective without causing damage to your roof.
